200 Inch Mule Deer

The Salmon River Mountains in Idaho hold some tremendous bucks but these mountains cover hundreds of square miles. In order to harvest one of these bucks you either need to be really lucky or hunt where big bucks tend to congregate. Most seasons do not allow a hunter to hunt when the deer are most vulnerable which is in November during the rut or early September while on their summer range. We have two very special allocated tags that allow us to do just that.

Unit 36-B

Our most popular tag is the unit 36-B November deer tag. This tag allows us to hunt Mule Deer bucks while in the rut with very little pressure from other hunters. We stay at our house/lodge and hunt using vehicles/ATV’s and horses if needed. There are only 5 other tags in the limited entry draw during this season. When you look at the draw odds in Idaho of all species, the only tag that is usually more coveted is the unit 11 Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep tag. It is nothing to see 50 bucks per day on this Idaho hunt.

Unit 36

Our other quality tag is for unit 36. This is an early-season hunt that allows us to pursue large bucks while they are on their summer range. This Idaho hunt opens September 1st and first began in 2019. This is a tent camp, horseback, warm weather Idaho hunt. There are 5 draw tags in this unit so the chance of seeing another hunter is very slim. We hunt high elevations and spend many hours riding horses and sitting on our butts glassing for these monster bucks. Most of these bucks have not shed velvet yet so if you are in shape and looking for a large, velvet buck, this is your hunt.

Unit 26 Wildnerness Rut Hunts

This is a fly in, tent camp, wilderness, horseback, rut hunt for Mule Deer in November. The Idaho Fish and Game limited the number of hunters in this unit in 2017. Since then, our Mule Deer have made a come back. This hunt allows you to hunt in the center of the Frank Church Wilderness on horseback. It is a very physical hunt and is sold as a combination hunt with elk. Each year we take some 180+ bucks in this unit and the majority of our hunters harvest a 165 or bigger. Just remember, the later you come, the better the deer hunting. Because we have multiple deer tags in our allocation, we can take groups of up to 6 hunters. We tend to see anywhere from 10-30 bucks a day on these hunts. Along with an elk tag, hunters can have a wolf tag, in fact, we encourage it. We can only harvest these large deer if you help us control the predators.

General Season Mule Deer

Mile High offers a few other options for mule deer. Most of our elk rifle and archery hunts are sold as combination hunts and allow you to get a Mule Deer tag along with your elk tag. We also offer a 4-day Mule Deer hunt in the front range Oct. 9-14. Please read the success rates on this website to see when most Mule Deer are harvested.
